Be careful about what you say after a car wreck

Nowadays, metro-area roadways seem to have more traffic than ever. Whether you are moving quickly down the highway or creeping along in rush-hour traffic, you may eventually find yourself in the middle of an automobile collision. What you say after the crash, though, may have a significant effect on your ability to receive compensation for your injuries and property damage.

After any car collision, you must take certain steps to protect yourself. As you may suspect, you are likely to have many opportunities to discuss the wreck with insurance adjusters, other drivers, co-workers, friends, family members and others. If you have sustained an injury or have a damaged vehicle, though, you must think twice about your conversations.

Admitting fault

Whether a collision is minor or severe, determining fault may not be simple. After all, you may not have all the information necessary to understand who caused the crash. Rather than admit fault at the accident scene, wait for investigators to do their job. Remember, even apologizing for the inconvenience of the collision may seem like an admission of fault.

Posting on social media

You may need to have official discussions with police officers and others about the car wreck. You do not, however, need to broadcast the incident to the world on social media. In fact, you probably should avoid saying anything at all on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Staying off social media after a wreck may also help you in a variety of other ways.

Ignoring your doctor

Motor vehicle accidents can take an unbelievable toll on the human body. Unfortunately, though, the heightened stress of a collision may deceive you into believing you are okay. Rather than ignoring your doctor, you should seek a medical opinion as soon after the wreck as possible. When you do, talk to your doctor about how the crash unfolded to be sure you receive the treatment you need to recover fully.

You probably do not have to worry about having dozens of automobile accidents in your lifetime. Because of that, though, you do not have many opportunities to practice your response. By thinking about what to say after a wreck, you likely improve your chances of receiving compensation for your injuries and property damage.
