How can I avoid a collision with a car while riding my bike?

Some car accidents that happen in the Silver Spring area involve bicyclists. Because they are more vulnerable than motorists, bicyclists who are hit by cars often sustain life-threatening injuries.

If you happen to spend a good deal of your time riding the roads in the area, take some time to review the following suggestions on how to stay safe and avoid an accident with a vehicle.

Wear a helmet

You may feel like a helmet is not necessary when you are out riding, but it can mean the difference between you sustaining minor head trauma and brain damage. Helmets help to cushion and shield your head from impact from the ground, vehicles and other objects.

Follow all traffic rules

You may think because motorists must give bicyclists and pedestrians the right of way that you have nothing to worry about. Many drivers do not always follow the traffic laws and rules. When riding your bike, follow all traffic rules and courtesies and avoid distractions.

By law, you must ride on the right side of the road. If there are bicycle lanes, use them instead of the street. If you must pass any vehicles, make sure they are to your left. Always check the intersections and traffic lights for moving vehicles before you move across traffic.

Wear reflective clothing

Do not rely on vehicle lights to make you visible to motorists. You should wear reflective clothing so people in their vehicles can see you at all times, especially during times when visibility is lower. Put reflectors on your bike and carry flashing lights when you ride at night.

When motorists and bicyclists follow all traffic laws and extend the right courtesies, they can share the roads safely with each other. If you cannot avoid an accident because a motorist is negligent, you may be able to hold him or her liable for your damages.
