Winners emerge from IIHS car accident safety tests

Results from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety crash tests show Maryland drivers have a number of new choices in the large and luxury classes. An article in USA Today helps explain why this is important in terms of the criteria for an automobile being designated a Top Safety Pick Plus. It also details why Tesla and others were not selected for the category.

Auto insurers fund the IIHS to carry out and make public some of the safety data used in determining risk and premiums. Consumers can use this data to aid in selecting vehicles that provide more protection during car accidents. The nonprofit uses five different tests to rate safety. Ability to withstand head-on collision is tested through small overlap front and moderate overlap front crashes. Restraint strength, roof and side crash response are also checked.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan, Lincoln Continental and Toyota Avalon all performed well enough on these tests to receive the highest safety designation. The Tesla Model S, Chevrolet Impala and Ford Taurus were primarily held up by the small overlap front crash. This car collision test simulates a head-on collision similar to hitting a telephone pole on the driver's side. The IIHS vice president stated that the major problems with these three vehicles were weakness in restraints and the safety cage.

Safety is a primary concern for most drivers on the streets and highways of Montgomery. Unfortunately, owning a large and highly rated automobile cannot offer complete protection against car accidents caused by a negligent or distracted driver. The outcomes may not be as bad in a larger vehicle, but there is always a risk of broken bones, brain injury and the need for medical treatment. Drivers who suspect others are at fault for their damages may find assistance pursuing their claims with an experienced attorney.
