Fatal truck accidents increase in 2015

The Large Truck and Bus Crash Facts, which is an annual report from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, indicates that between 2014 and 2015, the number of trucks involved in fatal crashes rose by 8 percent. Per the 2015 report, 4,050 trucks that weighed more than 10,000 pounds were involved in 3,598 deadly crashes.

There were a total of 415,000 crashes that involved trucks and were reported to the police in 2015. Of those crashes, 1 percent resulted in a death, and 20 percent resulted in a person being injured. Twenty percent of fatal accidents involved just one truck and a pedestrian, cyclist or a non-motorized vehicle. The majority of fatal crashes involved two vehicles.

There were 3,996 truck drivers involved in fatal crashes, and 206 of the truck drivers were 25 or younger while 211 of the truck drivers were 66 or older. Truck occupant fatalities also increased by 2 percent during 2015, and 89 percent of those killed were the truck's driver. The majority of accidents took place on rural roads, at 60 percent, and about a quarter of accidents occurred on interstate highways.

The loss of a loved one is always difficult, but it can be even harder to cope with when it is sudden such as a traffic accident. If someone has died as the result of negligence on the part of a trucking company or truck driver, an attorney representing the surviving family members might find it advisable to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the at-fault party or parties. Damages sought could include the reimbursement of funeral and burial expenses and loss contribution of the decedent.
