Maryland Bishop accused in fatal bicycle accident

It is not uncommon for drivers in Maryland to share the road with bicyclists. Whether there is a bike lane or the cyclist is on the roadway traveling near moving vehicles, drivers and bikers should be aware of safety tips and regulations that help promote safe traveling for both forms of transportation. Despite the effort to increase the safety between these two, accidents involving motor vehicles and bicycles do occur. Unfortunately, these types of accident also involve serious and even fatal injuries.

A shocking accident recently occurred in the Baltimore area. Authorities were dispatched to a fatal accident that happened around 2:45 p.m. When police arrived at the scene, officers found a 41-year-old man who had been struck by a vehicle while he was ridding his bike. The injuries the man suffered were grave. He was transported to the hospital for medical treatment, but he later succumbed to his injuries.

According to preliminary reports, police believe that an area Episcopal bishop was driving a Subaru station wagon southbound down the road when she struck the cyclist and fled the scene following the collision. Furthermore, authorities reported that the bishop later returned to the scene. Police are currently questioning her, but no charges have been made at this time.

The fatal accident is still under investigation, and this bicycle crash highlights the need to promote bike safety on the roadways. When accidents like this occur, once the investigation is complete, authorities may be able to establish cause and assign liability. The driver at fault could face both criminal and civil penalties for this accident. The loved ones of the deceased cyclist may be able to file a wrongful death claim. This suit could help them seek compensation, which could be used to pay for related expenses such as medical bills, funeral costs, lost wages and damages.

Whether it is a bicyclist or a pedestrian, drivers should be aware that they share the roadways with other travelers than just motor vehicles. If a driver is not attentive, is under the influence or is negligent or reckless, a serious or even fatal crash could occur. Victims and their loved ones should understand their recourses and how they can go about seeking legal remedies.
