Car accident and other motor vehicle deaths increase

No one in Maryland wants to hear the dreaded news that a loved one was killed in a fatal car wreck. Unfortunately, as of 2012, fatal motor vehicle accidents in the United States were on the rise after a six-year decline.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2012, over 33,000 people died in fatal motor vehicle accidents in the United States. This is an increase from 2011, in which only approximately 32,000 people died in motor vehicle crashes in the United States. This represented an uptick of 3.3 percent. Most fatalities -- 72 percent -- took place between the months of January through March.

In addition, in 2012 the number of fatalities due to drunk driving increased by over four percent. There were over 10,000 alcohol-related fatalities in 2012. Alcohol-related fatalities constituted 31 percent of all motor vehicle accident fatalities in 2012.

The number of injuries due to motor vehicle accidents in the United States in 2012 also rose from those in 2011. Approximately 2.36 million individuals were injured in motor vehicle accidents in 2012. In 2011, only 2.22 million individuals were injured in motor vehicle accidents. This was an increase of over six percent.

As these grave statistics show, car accidents are a common and unfortunate, part of life. Being injured in a car wreck can cause a person significant financial damages in the form of medical bills, lost income and pain and suffering. If a loved one dies in a car accident, their survivors are left to cope financially without them. When this happens, victims of car accidents or their survivors may wish to pursue legal action in the form of either a negligence or wrongful death suit.
