Retail giant Wal-Mart being sued by injured woman

Most people in Maryland who do their shopping are more concerned about sales and their grocery lists than they are about the potential hazards they may face in the store. Naturally, any consumer expects that the stores they are shopping at are safe. However, this is not always the case.

Retail giant Wal-Mart is facing a slip-and-fall lawsuit brought by a woman in another state who claims she was permanently injured when she slipped on the floor while shopping at a Wal-Mart in that state. The woman alleges that, while in the coffee aisle, she slipped on a wet substance on the floor.

The woman claims that she suffered injuries she describes as permanent and severe. She is seeking compensation for physical and emotional pain and suffering and for the medical expenses incurred due to the accident. She is also seeking compensation for loss of wages and earning potential and loss of lifestyle. The amount of compensation she is seeking has not been specified at this time.

According to the woman, Wal-Mart did not take the appropriate safety precautions to warn customers of the danger. She accuses the store of failing to place warning signs or floor mats in the aisle, failing to maintain the floors and failing to warn customers of the condition of the floor, among other claims.

As this shows, stores are responsible for safely maintaining their property so that patrons are not harmed while on the premises. This includes keeping their floors free of dangerous conditions. Should they fail to due so, causing a patron to become injured, they may face liability for the accident. While these types of lawsuits are usually decided on a case-by-case basis, in general if a liquid has been spilled on the floor and goes unnoticed by store employees for awhile, the store may face liability for a slip-and-fall accident. Customers injured inside a retail store may want to seek advice to see if they have a legal claim against that store.
