Maryland man killed in tragic workplace accident

Every day, Marylanders go to work. They may have a lot on their mind, including looming deadlines, upcoming vacation, pay issues, and co-worker spats, but they rarely think of their own personal safety. This is intentional as safety rules and regulations have been created and implemented to keep workers out of harm's way. Unfortunately, though, no system is perfect. Mistakes happen. Sometimes no one is at fault while other times an employer may have created unsafe working conditions. In either case, an unsuspecting worker can be serious injured, or worse.

Sadly, one of these workplace accidents occurred recently, leaving a Maryland man dead. The incident took place at Canam Steel when a large spool of metal, which was being loaded onto a crate, fell on the worker. He was pronounced dead at the scene. There are no indications of wrong-doing, but the fact remains that this man was unfairly lost, and his family may be left to pay the price.

Losing a loved one to a workplace accident can be traumatizing. Not only is there extreme emotional loss, but a family may also suffer severe financial loss related to medical expenses, funeral costs, and lost wages. Together, these harms can leave a family overwhelmed and stressed about how to pay their everyday bills.

Fortunately, these families may be able to receive death benefits through the workers' compensation system. If a claim is successful, then a surviving family may be able to recover medical expenses, funeral costs, and lost wages from the deceased's employer or the employer's insurance. The exact amount recoverable depends on the circumstances of the case, but a local attorney can help surviving family members understand their situation and how best to proceed.
