Woman sues Walmart for slip-and-fall accident

Hearing "Clean up in aisle 7!" over the grocery store intercom may cause some shoppers in Maryland to chuckle, and at the very least at least make them aware of a big mess to avoid. However, it is imperative that grocery stores take spills and other messes seriously. The failure to promptly clean up a spill could lead to a slip-and-fall accident.

Recently, a woman has filed a lawsuit against one of the largest store chains in the world: Walmart. According to the woman, she slipped on a puddle of water while shopping inside the O'Fallon, Illinois, store back in June 2012. The woman stated that Walmart failed to warn shoppers about the water spill, that it failed to provide employees with proper protocol regarding spills and that it failed to rope off the area of the spill, clean up the spill and put mats down.

The fall caused her to suffer numerous injuries to her spine and back. The woman was unable to work due to her injuries and also experienced great pain and suffering. In addition, she incurred hefty medical bills. She is seeking recovery in the amount of $50,000.

When property owners know or should know of dangerous conditions on their premises, they should take steps to fix the situation, or at least warn others present on the premises that the dangerous condition exists. If such a failure could foreseeably end in someone being injured, the property owner may in some circumstances be held liable for any injuries caused by the dangerous condition. Slip-and-fall lawsuits can be very nuanced. However, it is possible to hold all responsible parties legally accountable in slip-and-fall accidents.
