Accident at Maryland intersection injures two, kills one

All motorists must adhere to road signs and traffic lights while driving. Should a driver ignore these simple rules of the road, he or she could cause a car accident that in some cases could be fatal.

Police are investigating an accident in Maryland that left one individual dead and injured two others. The victims' vehicle -- a Pontiac Grand Am -- was attempting to make a left-hand turn at an intersection when it was struck by an individual driving a Honda Accord. The driver of the Honda Accord ran through the intersection after failing to yield at a stop sign. The victims had to be rescued after becoming trapped in their vehicle. All three occupants of the Pontiac Grand Am, including a teenager, were injured. They were sent to the hospital, but the driver of the Pontiac Grand Am ultimately passed away several hours later. The accident occurred around 11:00 in the evening. Police are determining whether to file criminal charges against the driver that struck the victim's vehicle.

If a negligent driver causes a car accident, the accident victims may be able to hold the driver liable and seek compensation. When pursuing a negligence claim, victims usually must show that the responsible driver breached their duty of care, that the breach caused the accident and that the accident caused the victim to suffer damages. Compensation sought may include recovery for pain and suffering, the cost of medical treatment and rehabilitation and in some cases lost wages or lost earning capacity.

People injured in car accidents should make sure they understand their rights. Speaking to an attorney who can explain the possible causes of action may be a good first step for victims to take. In some cases, victims may be able to file a lawsuit and obtain compensation for their injuries.
