Silver Spring construction worker tragically dies on Thanksgiving

Few of us ever expect that we will suffer a fatal accident while in the workplace much less during the holiday season. While many are able to spend time during the holidays with their family, some are less fortunate and must work extra hours to afford the extra expenses that come with the holiday season.

Early in the morning on Thanksgiving Day police responded to a report of an injured man at a Silver Spring townhouse development. At the construction site, police found a 56-year-old construction worker who had fallen in a freak accident. The man had arrived at the site to do some carpenter work and slipped on a patch of ice. He struck his head on the ground and tragically died.

Police reported that it did not appear that the man was carrying anything. Police also found a hard hat near the man's body. By afternoon ice was still visible in the spot where the man fell. Maryland OSHA will investigate the accident for foul play and workplace safety precautions. Additionally, a medical examiner will do an autopsy, but police report that there were no signs of foul play at the scene.

Tragically, deadly work accidents occur far too often in Maryland. Such accidents often leave family members financially strapped. The may also experience difficulties paying for funeral and medical expenses. Families are also often challenged with the unexpected loss in family income, especially during the holiday season. Maryland law permits surviving family members to file for workers' compensation death benefits in some cases.
