Family receives a $4M reward following tragic decision by doctor

Sadly birth injuries are all too common in Maryland and across the county. Medical negligence by doctors and staff leave families suffering and all too often children with permanent disabilities. Recently, an obstetrician's negligence caused permanent injuries to a young girl.

A Pennsylvania jury determined that an obstetrician failed to perform a cesarean section when a mother's labor stalled. The verdict came after a four-day trial where the jury heard evidence that the doctor failed to recognize signs that the mother needed a c-section performed. For example, the doctor knew the baby would be large - an ultrasound showed the baby weighed about 10 pounds. And while the mother voiced her concern that the baby was too big for a natural birth, the doctor made assurances that there was nothing to worry about.

Despite these assurances, when the mother was admitted for labor, things went wrong. The labor stopped progressing for nearly eight hours, yet the doctor chose to proceed with a natural delivery. Things then got even worse when at one point the baby's shoulder became stuck on her mother's pelvis, causing a crucial half-an-hour delay, which deprived the baby of oxygen.

The young girl is now four-years-old and suffers mild cerebral palsy and neurological injuries. The mother also suffered injuries from the doctor's decision that rendered her incontinent and unable to work. The jury awarded $4 million to the woman and her child as a result of her injuries.

Parents of children that suffered from birth injuries while in a hospital's care may benefit from contacting a legal professional about helping them find justice for the injuries suffered.
