Maryland officer charged following car accident investigation

Motor vehicle accidents are a common sight around the D.C. area and across Maryland. Almost every day an innocent person is the victim of a car accident. What is far less common is when a car accident is caused by those who are responsible for enforcing the rules of the road.

Recently, an off-duty Howard County Maryland police officer caused a car accident that injured four people. The accident occurred in Pasadena when the officer made an illegal U-turn on Route 100. Following an investigation, the officer was charged with reckless and negligent driving as well as four counts of second-degree assault. Two girls in the car that was hit were airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries from the accident. The other two passengers were also taken to a hospital with injures that were not life-threatening. The officer was not injured.

An illegal U-turn is a violation of traffic rules and can pose a major threat to the safety of other drivers and passengers. Such conduct is negligent often makes it much easier to prove that one driver was at fault for an accident. There are a number of traffic violations that can lead to car accidents, including driving under the influence, speeding and texting while driving.

Victims of such car accidents can recover compensation for their losses including compensation for medical expenses, physical disability and other economic losses. Depending on the accident, a victim can recover from the driver of the vehicle or the driver's employer. While this compensation cannot help heal people following a serious car accident, it can make it easier for people for focus on their recovery.
