Maryland drivers with road rage causes tragic accident

Road rage seems innocent enough; a flip of the bird or perhaps riding a person's bumper, but sometimes road rage can turn into tragedy. For two vehicles traveling on Interstate 95 in Harford County, what started out as road rage ended in two dead, three injured and potentially a wrongful death lawsuit when the cars collided.

A preliminary police investigation indicated that there was a dispute between the driver of a car and the occupants of a SUV. Investigators were told the dispute might have started along I-95 when the SUV stopped suddenly, forcing the driver of the car to stop his vehicle. The vehicles later collided in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95.

Both vehicles pulled to the shoulder and several people got out of the SUV. One of the individuals then went up to the vehicle and banged on the windows. Witnesses say that when the driver of the car pulled away from the SUV, he turned into oncoming traffic and hit the side of a truck causing an accident. The car then soon ignited in flames.

One brave off-duty Maryland state trooper pulled three people from a burning car, but only one would survive the crash. State police identified the victims as a 31-year-old from Abingdon and a 17-year-old from Baltimore.

The driver was pronounced dead at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center. His passenger was flown to Shock Trauma, where she later died. Their car was fully engulfed in fire and would likely have trapped all three victims if the state trooper hadn't rescued them.

The trooper suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

Police say the SUV left the scene before talking with authorities.
