Deadly Landover KFC crash investigated by police

Authorities in Prince George's County continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding a deadly car crash earlier this week. In addition to leaving one person dead, two other people suffered personal injuries as a result of the accident. While their injuries are said to be non-life threatening, officials say they were both hospitalized for their wounds.

The accident occurred Monday night at about 6:30 in Landover. Officials say that a black BMW being driven by 29-year-old Hellena Louise Smith plowed into a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in the 6700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Highway. They say that she apparently had been speeding. Some reports put her speed at around 100 mph. She apparently lost control of the vehicle and it proceeded to strike a curb and take to the air.

Indications are that the vehicle flipped several times causing damage along a path running almost 100 yards. It reportedly struck a vehicle that was pulling out of a parking spot in the KFC lot and finally smashed into the shop's front, sending glass shards throughout the interior.

Officials say the woman's body was ejected from the car and she was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in her vehicle suffered injuries, as did a man who was in the vehicle that was struck as it was pulling out of the parking area.

In addition to the issue of apparent excessive speed, a spokesman for Prince George's County police says investigators are looking into whether alcohol may have been a factor as well.
