Multiple people hurt in Montgomery County beltway accident

When we get behind the wheel of our cars, turn on our favorite commute music and sip on our coffee from our travel mugs, it is easy to believe that we are alone on the road. It can feel like our individual actions affect only ourselves. That is not true.

Yesterday on the Georgia Avenue exit of the beltway in Montgomery County, a traffic accident took place that proves driving doesn't happen in a vacuum. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the Wheaton crash.

What is known is that what was likely one driver's mistake turned into at least nine people getting hurt in the accident. According to a local report, emergency responders arrived at the crash scene just before noon. They found a pile-up involving various vehicles, including a tractor trailer.

Fortunately, none of the nine people who were reportedly injured and sent to area hospitals were fatally hurt. Some did sustain serious injuries, but they are expected to recover. Among those injured, at least one was a child. This is the reality of what can happen when any one of us doesn't drive responsibly.

As mentioned earlier, the direct cause of the crash is unknown. There is no report that alcohol or drug use was involved in the accident. Perhaps another common factor was the culprit - distracted driving. Even though more and more people and organizations are speaking out against texting behind the wheel, too many drivers fail to recognize how dangerous cell phone use can be while driving.

When there are developments about what led to the multi-vehicle crash, we will be sure to post an update on this blog.
