Maryland man falls into Chesapeake Bay after big rig accident

The Maryland community is mourning the death of a long-time local sports editor and writer. The former Merced Sun-Star employee died in a tragic accident on a Baltimore bridge last week when he was knocked into the waters of the Chesapeake Bay by a large truck.

The truck accident occurred right after the morning rush hour last Monday when the victim was forced to pull his vehicle over to the side of the Bay Bridge due to mechanical difficulties. As the 70-year-old man exited his car a big rig truck collided with the back of his vehicle, which subsequently pushed the victim over the side of the bridge's barrier.

Investigators and law enforcement authorities who responded to reports of the accident claim that the man fell approximately 52 feet before hitting the water. A team of officials is still in the process of determining exactly what happened during the fatal incident, but doctors officially declared the victim's death not long after his fall.

Historically, the Bay Bridge does not have a strong history of traffic accidents, and the Merced Sun Star reports that their former editors death is only the second of its kind in well over half-a-century.

The victim's successful sports writing career brought him to locations as far away as Honolulu before he began working for USA Today where he was known to be good pals with Tiger Woods. His death is a reminder of how important it is for drivers to be aware of their surroundings and watch for unexpected obstacles on the road.
