New Year's Eve Crash Injures Five, Results in DUI Charges

In a previous post, we discussed how common car accidents and emergency room visits for young people on New Year's Eve. Unfortunately for a number of young people near Delmar, this year was not immune from New Year's Eve crashes or emergency room visits.

At around 11 p.m. on New Year's Eve, a car driven by a 16-year-old girl was involved in a collision with a pickup truck driven by a 24-year-old man. According to the police, the girl was driving eastbound on Dorothy Road when she attempted to cross over into Northbound Route 13. The girl allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign and was struck by the pickup truck as she entered northbound 13.

The collision reportedly caused the pickup truck to leave the road and overturn. The vehicle driven by the girl ended up in a nearby ditch.

The driver of the pickup truck, the 16-year-old girl, and two of the girl's passengers were taken by ambulance to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital and were treated from injuries deemed not life threatening. A third passenger in the girl's car suffered head injuries and was airlifted to Christiana Hospital in Newark. There have been no reported updates on the conditions of the passengers.

Police issued a summons to the teen driver citing her for driving under the influence of alcohol, failing to stop at a stop sign, and failing to present proof of insurance. There was no indication of how much alcohol may have been in the driver's system, but in Maryland, an underage driver can be considered under the influence with any alcohol at all in his or her system.
