$50 Million Lawsuit Filed in Relation to 2008 Helicopter Crash

A woman that managed to survive a horrific helicopter crash in 2008 recently filed a $50 million lawsuit against the Federal Aviation Administration. The suit alleges that the FAA's negligence resulted in the crash that caused her to suffer serious injuries and resulted in the death of four other people.

The chain of events began when on September 27 of 2008 when the woman and a friend were involved in a car accident in Waldorf. A Maryland State Police helicopter was called in to transport the two car accident victims to an airport where they would then be transported to a hospital.

On the trip back to the airport, the helicopter pilot was unable to get accurate navigational or weather information from the FAA air traffic controllers. The controllers also allegedly failed to provide the pilot with appropriate radar information as it approached the airport. Eventually the helicopter crashed in a wooded area near Walker Mill Regional Park.

The woman bringing the current lawsuit was the sole survivor of the crash. She is seeking compensation for the loss of one of her legs and for post-traumatic stress disorder. She has reportedly undergone more than 30 surgeries as a result of the accident and is in danger of losing her other leg as well.

Two previous wrongful death lawsuits were filed in relation to the helicopter crash. One of the suits was brought by the family of a police officer on board the helicopter and the other was brought by the family of an EMT that also died in the crash. Those lawsuits were filed in federal court earlier this year and sought $7 million and $15 million, respectively.
