October Ends with Thousands of Recalled Automobiles

On October 21, Toyota's U.S. Division announced the recall of nearly 750,000 vehicles for potentially serious problems with the braking systems. Days later, Honda Motor Co followed suit and announced the recall of half a million automobiles due to a similar brake problem.

It's a sensitive area, for Toyota especially, due to the number of car accidents attributed to faulty brake systems and brake failure. The first of Toyota's many recalls over the past year was instigated by a tragic car accident in California.

Perhaps Honda was hoping to slip their announcement by under the cover of yet another Toyota recall. Regardless, both companies made national news.

Nissan North America also announced a recall of vehicles in late October, issuing notifications to around 747,000 Nissan truck and SUV owners in the United States to alert them to the potential for electrical system failure in certain models. No car accidents have been tied to the problem, which can cause Nissan vehicles to stall and/or refuse to start.

In Honda's case, the issue supposedly stems from the use of third party brake fluid, which can cause bits of rubber used in the brake's master cylinder to dry out and leak fluid. This decreases the ability of brakes to actually stop the car and it's quite feasible that such a problem could end with a car accident.
