Fatal Car Accident Tied to Speeding and Drunk Driving

A fatal car accident occurring last summer in the city of Thurmont is alleged to have been caused by a driver traveling at an excessive speed after having been drinking. Last week, authorities criminally charged the driver with negligent homicide and manslaughter by motor vehicle.

The accident occurred on July 5th when the driver decided to go out for cigarettes after having been celebrating his 21st birthday with friends. A close friend accompanied the driver on the trip. According to reports, the driver was traveling almost 100 mph when he lost control of the car and struck a utility pole.

The collision broke the utility pole in half and caused the car to overturn and strike a porch attached to a nearby home. Neither the driver nor the passenger was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and both were thrown from the vehicle. The driver's 22-year-old passenger was killed in the accident.

After the crash, the driver's blood-alcohol content was measured at .25, more than three times Maryland's legal limit of .08. At this time, there is no indication that any other vehicles, road conditions, or any mechanical problems contributed to the accident.

At this time there is no indication of any wrongful death or civil lawsuit being brought by the deceased's family, but criminal charges against the driver include negligent homicide, manslaughter, driving under the influence, negligent driving and reckless driving. The driver is said to be cooperating with authorities since the charges were filed and his arrest warrant was served.
