Johnson & Johnson Could Face a Flood of Wrongful Death Suits

In the eight years since Johnson & Johnson first introduced the Ortho Evra birth control patch, the company has made close to $1.6 billion on the product. During that time, they have also paid around $68 million to quietly settle wrongful death and personal injury lawsuits related to the patch.

Like Toyota, Johnson & Johnson's mishandling of one product recall (Children's Motrin and Children's Tylenol) has blown the cover off other questionable products at the company. Opposed to the recalled drugs, the Ortho Evra patch has been linked to very serious health concerns and is believed to have caused a number of deaths and more injuries.

Unlike normal birth control pills, the Ortho Evra patch introduces a much greater supply of estrogen into the user's bloodstream. This supply of estrogen is consistently distributed via the patch for an entire week, administering about 60 percent more than the pill would.

According to the TODAY show, "patient reports between 2002 and 2004 show that "Ortho Evra was 12 times more likely to cause strokes and 18 times more likely to cause blood clots than the conventional birth control pill."

Equally concerning is the growing amount of evidence that top officials at Johnson & Johnson knew about the drug's potential side effects, but chose to continue selling the product anyway. Some even believe that the company intentionally hid information regarding the risks faced by women using the patch.

In total, according to NBC writers Jeff Rossen and Robert Powell, close to 2,500 women claim to have been victims of Ortho Evra, while wrongful death lawsuits have been filed by more than 24 families.
