Aspiring Maryland Politician Hit and Killed in Car Accident

An aspiring Maryland politician passed away on Monday after being struck by an SUV while riding her bike along Route 202. Natasha Pettigrew was running as a Green Party candidate for the United States Senate and, though a political long shot, many agreed that the 30-year-old had a bright future in front of her.

Pettigrew was also in training for a triathlon, getting in miles on her bike in the early hours of Sunday. The SUV struck her from behind, dragging her bike all the way to the driver's home, while Pettigrew lay critically injured in the road.

The motor vehicle accident is believed to have happened around 5:30.

The SUV's driver claimed to have believed that a deer had been struck, and did not see Pettigrew. It's still unclear how the accident happened, but Maryland police have not yet filed any criminal charges.

The driver did report the crash promptly, albeit after finding the bicycle still attached to the SUV's undercarriage. At about 6:30 a.m., Prince George police officers were alerted to the car accident and reported to the scene.

As investigators continue to sift through the information available, officers have refrained from releasing too many details stemming from their investigation of the accident. They did, however, say that neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to have been factors in the fatal accident.
