Maryland Company Works to Help Teen Drivers Avoid Car Accidents

One Baltimore Company is taking a proactive approach to educating Maryland teen drivers about potential road dangers and good driving habits that could avoid a car accident. Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) held an event on Saturday exposing teen drivers to road hazards they may encounter and how to safely handle these situations. This event came at a perfect time as the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported that car accidents are now the leading cause of teenage death in the U.S. They estimate that more than one-third of teen fatalities are the result of car accidents.

So how did BGE help teenage drivers be safer motorists? With golf carts and drunk-simulated goggles. BGE representatives held educational sessions about good driving habits and allowed kids to experience how it feels to drive drunk on a closed-road course. Additionally, attendees had the opportunity to speak with Shock Trauma nurses about the proper use of seat beats and how they can save your life.

More than 60 BGE employee's children, 40 county police kids and their parents participated in Saturday's event. The company began providing these classes nine years ago to teens whose parents worked for BGE. Parents who attended described that they have already seen a change in their children's attitude following the event..

Maryland has a graduated driver's license program but the state hopes that programs like this one will positively decrease the amount of teenage deaths in the future. On average, 16,375 youth (12 to 19) died annually in car accidents from 1999 to 2006.
