Pedestrian accident in Maryland results in one death

A pedestrian is particularly vulnerable to drivers. Without the exterior protection of a car, any individual walking or even biking is exposed to substantial potential danger. While the state of Maryland has laws in place to protect pedestrians from negligent or distracted drivers, accidents that result in wrongful death still occur.

One person is dead after being struck by a car in Washington County recently. Authorities say the accident occurred in the early morning on Thursday, May 1 in the 8700 block of Downsville Pike in Williamsport. As a result of the incident, Downsville Pike was closed between Route 68 and Route 63 as police investigated the crash. The road reopened after 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

Tragically, a pedestrian walking in the area was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound. The pedestrian, an 81-year-old woman from the area, was pronounced dead at the scene. A number of individuals were present at the scene of the accident while authorities arrived. One neighbor indicated she saw the woman regularly walk her dog in the area. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident. At this time, details are unknown.

In the state of Maryland, the loved ones of a deceased individual can bring a wrongful death action against a negligent driver in civil court. Such litigation often brings important monetary compensation to the family members of the harmed individual. Compensation can cover medical expenses, funeral costs as well as pain and suffering associated with the loss.

Bringing a civil claim against a negligent driver not only brings justice to the harmed family, but it also provides a deterrent for future negligent acts, either by the specific negligent driver involved in the incident or others who might have operated a vehicle in a negligent manner.
