Maryland family receives $90 million in wrongful death suit

Losing a loved one can be one of the most difficult times in any individual's life. But if that loss is due to the negligence of another, the family may be entitled to compensation for the loss.

Fatal accidents are a common cause of wrongful death. Accidents on the road or at the workplace are common reasons for a wrongful death suit.

In 2009, a Maryland teen was killed as she tried to catch her school bus. She was crossing the street to get on the bus when a car hit and killed her. A jury recently awarded her family $90 million to compensate for their loss. The girl was 13-years-old when she was hit. The teen died in the hospital two weeks later from her injuries.

The family of the teen sued the school claiming that the school failed to provide students with safe transportation to and from school that the school had promised. The parents claim that the school failed because there was no bus stop on their home's side of the road, forcing the girl to cross the street to get on the bus. The family had asked and the school had promised to provide a stop on her side of the street, but the school failed to do so.

The $90 million jury award came at the end of a long civil trial. The jury chose to award the family with this amount to cover medical expenses and funeral costs. The Board of Education reportedly plans to appeal the verdict. The girl's parents indicated that they aren't worried about the money, but they wanted someone to be found responsible for the accident.
