Maryland police officer in training shot in accident

Some people have incredibly dangerous jobs. Farmers, policemen and policewomen and firefighters are among those that face a high risk of injury and death every day they go to work. But workers with dangerous jobs have access to the same benefits as those who sit behind a desk, safe from known workplace dangers.

When a work injury occurs, workers' compensation laws protect an injured worker, a safety net of sorts. Workers' compensation is designed to ensure injured workers receive fixed benefits without having to litigate their injury claims against their employers. The system is considered a substitute for personal injury litigation.

This week was an example of how dangerous a police officer's job can be even when in training. A Maryland police trainee is in critical condition after being shot in the head in a training accident. The accident occurred at a firearms training center in Owings Mills, a suburb of Baltimore. City police were administering the training. The man training for the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus police was in his 40s. He remains in critical condition and underwent surgery at the Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. Police are still investigating the accident.

The workers' compensation system is designed to ensure injured employees receive benefits, but without the proper representation an injured employee may not obtain all the benefits they deserve. An attorney that specializes in workers compensation law can help an injured worker navigate the at times complicated system and obtain all benefits that have the right to receive.
