Teen pleads guilty for crash that killed passengers

A Maryland teen has pled guilty to two counts of criminally negligent manslaughter after an accident that resulted in the deaths of his passengers. The 19-year-old driver has signed a plea agreement resulting in a reduced sentence, with a maximum of six years jail time, six months of home detention and five years of supervised probation.

According to testimony, the car was traveling at 70 mph in a 20 mph zone. His two passengers, a 19-year-old male and an 18-year-old male, were killed when the car crashed into a tree. Neither of the passengers was wearing a seatbelt.

Cases like this one are a sorrowful reminder of the importance of simple safety precautions, like wearing a seatbelt. The young men who died as a result of irresponsible and hazardous driving may have survived had they been wearing their safety belts; however, they likely would have been seriously injured. A car crash at 70 mph is seriously risky, and the driver in control of the vehicle made the decision to drive in that manner, taking his life and the lives of his friends into his hands.

Families who lose loved ones or who are face serious injuries as passengers of vehicles with an irresponsible driver, like this case, or who are involved accidents in which another driver is driving irresponsibly can gain some financial recompense for their suffering or medical costs. In this case, the law has been served in that the young man has been charged and prosecuted. The families of the boys who died, however, can never get their loved ones back, a sad reminder of the necessity of responsible and safe driving.
