Delay in C-section causes permanent brain damage to child

If it isn't the happiest moment in any parent's life, than giving birth to a child certainly is one of the happiest moments. The parents can marvel at the life they just created; their son or daughter calmly breathing as they wait a day or two to leave the hospital and take their newborn home. Most of the time, this is the way the script works -- but sometimes, poor medical care or negligent hospital staff can turn the dream of a newborn child into a nightmare.

Birth injuries can severely (and often permanently) affect a newborn child, and the medical professionals who failed to do their job properly should be held accountable for the damage they have caused. One family in Baltimore, Maryland received a tiny sense of justice after their medical malpractice lawsuit had a positive outcome; a jury found the hospital they attended for the birth of their son negligent after hospital staff waited two hours to give the woman a C-section she desperately needed.

The mother in the lawsuit was giving birth at home wife a midwife, when her son became stuck. She needed a C-section, and the family called emergency responders to take her to a hospital. When she arrived, hospital staff agreed -- she needed a C-section. But, for some reason, hospital staff took two hours before acting on the apparently urgent needs of the woman and, ultimately, the child.

The family's son, now two years old, has multiple developmental disorders which will likely prevent him from living the normal life he should have enjoyed. A jury awarded the family a staggering $55 million for the ordeal.
