Harford County marks end of bloody month on highways

The top police official in Maryland's Harford County says this just-ended February was perhaps the worst ever in terms of the number of people killed or injured in motor vehicle accidents. Officials confirm seven people died. The exact number of people who suffered serious personal injury is unclear from the news reports we've read.

Regardless, Sheriff Jesse Bane, who has been in law enforcement nearly four decades, says he can't remember a more deadly February. The statistics indicate that fatalities, many of which likely may be considered wrongful deaths, equaled nearly one third of all the deaths that would normally be expected in a single 12-month period.

There is more to say about the numbers of deaths and injuries on Harford County highways, but at this point we want to remind readers who have suffered injury or the loss of a loved one that there are opportunities for recovering compensation. Because of the complexity of any given case and laws regarding accountability, it is important to work with a lawyer with solid experience dealing with insurers, investigations, medical providers and the courts.

Returning to Harford, one of the things that Sheriff Bane says he is particularly concerned about is that his northeast Maryland county is rising in state rankings for traffic deaths. It went from sixth in 2009 to fourth in 2011. That is in comparison with the much more densely populated counties such as Baltimore, Montgomery, Prince George's and Anne Arundel.

Bane has gone on record as saying that he intends to look into what can be done to bring the fatality rate down going forward.
