Safety standards at DuPont plant put workers at risk, killed one

DuPont is a big company with locations in various countries around the world. One of DuPont's plants is located nearby, in West Virginia. While the goal of the company is to offer a wide array of products and services for a multitude of scientific fields, it seems at least the nearby facility has forgotten that those services should not cost workers their safety.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the Belle facility is earning a reputation for its dangerous safety standards. At least one employee from the location died in a workplace accident, which could have been prevented. That happened in 2010, and the company is still on the radar of safety authorities.

To be specific, on Jan. 23, 2010, a 32-year-employee of DuPont was exposed to a deadly chemical leak and didn't survive his work injuries. The hose that the victim was using had been damaged and, therefore, leaked the choking agent that ultimately killed its user.

What adds to the tragedy and frustration of that wrongful death is that the facility had been previously warned before about the safety of its hoses. It's not like the hoses are used to move something mild like water. They contain serious gases that undoubtedly put workers' lives at risk every day. Because the facility never replaced its hoses with some made of safer materials, the DuPont employee lost his life.

WSJ reports that federal investigators have officially cited the company for the fatal incident and other noted presences of safety risks that preceded the victim's avoidable death. DuPont has been instructed to do a thorough reevaluation and makeover of its safety practices. A federal investigation into the plant is not over.
