Maryland drivers: Don't make summer streets scary for bicyclists

It's the time of year when people are hitting the streets by foot or bicycle to get in a summer stroll or bike ride. It's beautiful out, and pedestrians should be able to feel safe when they make the healthy decision to forego a car ride for a leisurely workout.

It's tragic and frustrating that pedestrians can't exercise outside without fearing for their safety. A recent bike accident is a reminder that drivers need to use more caution on the roads, especially when they notice pedestrians around them.

According to The Baltimore Sun, a man went for a bike ride earlier this month and never returned home. During his morning ride, he reportedly attempted to move lanes but couldn't without a driver of a sedan crashing into him.

As a result of the crash, the Maryland bicyclist suffered critical injuries. He didn't die at the scene of the accident but sadly died later in a medical center. Now, it is up to authorities and potential witnesses to find justice for the lost life.

When a driver causes a crash, he or she is required to stop to respond to and report the incident. In this case, the driver responsible for the accident reportedly stopped very briefly but then made the misguided, illegal decision to drive off. Authorities are investigating the crash with the hope that witnesses of the crash can lead them to the liable driver.

Having a driver's license is about more than the ability to get oneself to and from different locations. It's about responsibility and safety. During these summer months, utilizing extra caution is important, as the many people who ride bikes or walk are hitting the streets.
