3-month-old girl caught beneath wheels of improperly parked car

A recent Maryland tragedy emphasizes how important it is for drivers to pay close attention to their driving habits, even after the engine has stopped. While dropping her children off at daycare, a Maryland mother failed to properly park her car, allowing it to roll backwards and seriously injure both herself and her two young children.

According to police investigators, the car accident occurred as the mother pulled her vehicle into the slightly slanted driveway of her daycare provider. When the woman exited the car, investigators believe that she failed to put it in the proper parking gear.

The mother was helping her 3-month-old daughter out of the vehicle when she heard her young son panic as the car began to roll towards him. Attempting to help her son, both the mother and her infant daughter were clipped by an open car door and fell beneath the vehicle.

As it continued to roll backwards down the driveway, the wrongly-parked car ran over both the mother and the two young children. All of the victims required medical attention, but the 3-month-old infant's injuries were the most serious. She died soon after the accident, despite the efforts of two neighbors who performed CPR on the infant until emergency responders could arrive.

Police officers are preparing an accident report which will determine whether or not the mother will face any criminal charges, although initial accounts suggest that this incident was simply a tragic accident. Nevertheless, it serves as a powerful reminder of just how dangerous motor vehicles can be when drivers allow themselves to become distracted and forgetful-even after exiting the vehicle.
