77-year-old man struck and killed by snow plow

The season's first major snowstorm has reportedly caused a number of serious car accidents, including the death of a 77-year-old man who was allegedly struck by a snowplow as we walked along the side of a snow-covered road. Initial reports have indicated that the victim of the accident was Richard Oles, the renown fencing coach of John Hopkins University, who coached there for more than forty years.

According to new reports, Oles' car had been towed to a gas station and he was beginning to walk back toward his home along Mountain Road at 2:30 a.m. The road was apparently narrowed by all of the recent snow and before he made it much more than a block from the station, he was hit by a truck that had a snowplow attached to the front.

Oles was reportedly taken to Baltimore-Washington Medical Center, but was pronounced dead around 3:30 a.m.

A witness reportedly called 911 and reported that a red Ford F350 with a plow had hit the pedestrian and had not stopped. It is unclear whether the driver knew he or she had hit a pedestrian. Police are searching for the vehicle and asking or assistance in finding the driver.

For anyone that may be driving or traveling by foot in the snow, it is worth taking some time to observe some good winter weather traveling habits. Chief among those is to remember that your ability to stop or steer a motor vehicle may be significantly more limited than normal.

For pedestrians, it is important to make sure that you can see and be seen. Since drivers may not be able to stop quickly, you should try to keep yourself in a place where you can see traffic and react to it if a car appears to be losing control.
