Fatal Car Accident on I-70 Not Related to Interchange Confusion

According to the State Highway Administration, the fatal car accident occurring on I-70 earlier this month was not caused by driver confusion or disorientation resulting from the recently constructed interchange of I-70 and Maryland Route 85.

The motor vehicle accident occurred in the early morning hours of December 9 when a driver used the interchange to enter Interstate 70 from Route 85 and then traveled in the wrong direction a short distance before colliding with a tractor-trailer. The driver of the tractor-trailer did not suffer any injuries, but the woman driving the car was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities believe the woman driving the car may have been intoxicated at the time of the crash, but test results will not be available for a few more weeks. Police at the scene of the accident claimed to have smelled alcohol.

The highway administration claims that it has not had any complaints about the interchange being confusing or difficult to navigate. This was reportedly the first accident to occur near the new road. The new interchange was reportedly constructed to ease merging and avoid the need for drivers to quickly change lanes when changing roads.

Generally speaking, engineers and government agencies do a great deal of research into road construction to ensure the roads are not overly confusing or likely to lead to accidents. However, it some cases these projects do not go as plan and can result in particularly dangerous intersections or ramps. If you are involved in an accident that seems to have been caused by a dangerous or poorly designed road, you may want to seek legal guidance to determine if you might have a legal claim.
