Undercarriage L.E.D.s Could Prevent Accidents, Save Lives

Rollover accidents can create some of the most dangerous road conditions imaginable. The danger exists, not just for the vehicle's occupants during the crash, but for other drivers on the road immediately afterward.

In response, a veteran firefighter has developed a crash-activated lighting system that he believes will help prevent car accidents and save lives around the country. The E.R.V.A.L . system (Emergency Rollover Vehicle Awareness Light) is composed of a sensor and four bright, red L.E.D. lights. Whenever a vehicle tips past 45 degrees, the lights are triggered.

The E.R.V.A.L . system's inventor, Eric Carpenter, has been a member of the Los Angeles Fire Department for the past nine years. In that time, he's seen his share of rollover accidents and, in addition, the opportunity to help both those involved in the rollover and other drivers.

In his piece for ABC 30, Tommy Tran discusses last summer's deadly crash involving a rolled over SUV and a Greyhound bus. In total, six died. Would undercarriage warning lights have prevented the second collision?

Carpenter thinks so, and tests carried out so far seem to vouch for his point. However, it's a matter of getting the E.R.V.A.L. system registered as a patent. Until then, Carpenter is precluded from pursuing auto manufacturers too vigorously.

Still, as Tran reports, the veteran fireman is confident that his invention will save lives someday - it's just a matter of when.
