Two Pedestrians Killed in a Montgomery County Crosswalk

Two pedestrians were struck and killed while crossing the street in the early hours of Sunday morning this past week. The deaths mark the 10th and 11th pedestrian fatalities this year in Maryland's Montgomery County, adding to an already tragic total.

The car accident occurred around 3:00 a.m. on Sunday morning. The two victims, both 26 years old, seem to have been returning from a birthday party. Police have noted that the crossing lights were not functioning at the time of the accident and that the traffic lights were yellow and flashing.

Police acknowledged that they believe alcohol was involved on the part of the driver, who was given a breathalyzer test at the scene of the accident. Still, charges have yet to be filed in the case.

According to officers, this is not uncommon in a case where investigations are ongoing. Even so, some have questioned the willingness of officers to let the driver go - especially since alcohol seems to have been involved and the car accident resulted in two deaths.

Police are not yet sure whether or not the two pedestrians involved were intoxicated at the time.

As Montgomery County Pedestrian Safety Coordinator Jeff Dunckel pointed out to Fox News, the responsibility lies with both the pedestrian and driver. Of course, flashing yellow lights are a signal that drivers need to slow down, but those on foot are also expected to look both ways.

Still, it seems extremely likely that charges will be filed against the driver.
