The End of Car Accidents?

Every year, thousands are injured in Maryland car accidents because of distracted, careless drivers. It's no problem that people want to eat breakfast, put on makeup or text their friends. The problem is that people seem to want to do these things, and others like them, behind the wheel of their car.

However, imagine a car that takes over when you take your eyes off of the road. Not only would this be safer for the drivers of these vehicles, but for everyone else as well. Imagine a car that senses bikers when you don't, recognizes that cars ahead are slowing down and knows all the right turns.

This car exists, at least as a prototype. Though, if Google engineers have anything to say about it, such a vehicle will come to market.

And if a project were going to pick an ally, Google is a good one to have.

Conceived by Stanford's Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Director, Sebastian Thrun, the self-driving automobiles currently being pursued by Google engineers could go a long way towards making safer roads.

Of course, it seems unlikely that drivers would be able to completely shirk responsibility in such a vehicle and, indeed, Google's system allows for a quick takeover by human hands. Still, researchers are hopeful.

The mini-fleet of cars being tested by Google has completed close to 150,000 miles of travel with minimum driver interaction. With many thousands of miles to go, it remains to be seen whether this idea will actually have wheels.
