Moped Driver Killed in Fatal Maryland Car Accident

Mohammed Hammad Chaudhry, the 24-year-old son of a well-known Pakistani political and international relations analyst, died in a Maryland hospital on Sunday after being struck by the driver of a large pickup truck.

The accident occurred as Chaudhry crossed an intersection on Tamar Drive, which is about 30 miles from Washington, D.C. He was struck by Marganta Gonzalez Cruz, who was turning left from the opposite direction.

Chaudhry was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was pronounced dead. Cruz was not injured in the truck accident. While Maryland authorities have yet to release an official accident report, it is believed that Cruz will be found to have recklessly turned into the moped's path.

The accident highlights the need for attentive drivers on Maryland roads and is yet another tragic example of the lack of respect afforded two-wheel modes of transportation. Until an official report is made available, it is hard to say exactly what happened, but in most cases like this, the driver simply was not paying attention.

For moped riders, motorcyclists and bikers, it is another reminder of the danger present on roads where one mistake could cause severe injury and even lead to death.

As with motorcycle riders and bikers, moped drivers need to make sure that they are protected, and the easiest way to do that is by using a helmet at all times. Sure. it is an extra thing to carry around and, on a hot summer day. that is the last thing you want to wear.

However, if it saves your life, it is more than worth it. Maryland police have not said whether Chaudhry was wearing a helmet at the time of the truck accident.
