Celebrate Women's Motorcycle Month by Practicing Motorcycle Safety

While motorcycles are generally considered to be a male-dominated mode of transportation, the fact is many women have graced the backs of these steel horses and many more women continue to enjoy the freedom motorcycles have to offer. July is Women's Motorcycle Month and, as riders across the country celebrate the unique spirit and sense of adventure that led them to their first ride, it is also worth taking a moment to consider motorcycle safety.

Every year, thousands of motorcyclists are involved in accidents involving cars and trucks, as well as some single-vehicle accidents. With the freedom afforded to motorcycle riders comes a great deal of responsibility to shield oneself from dangerous situations and protect oneself in the event of a motorcycle accident.

First, it is important to wear proper clothing. Many motorcycle accidents are caused by negligent car and truck drivers who switch lanes without looking, make left turns into the path of an oncoming motorcycle or perform other, equally dangerous, maneuvers. While it is hard to prevent these situations from occurring, it is possible to protect yourself if one does arise.

Wearing leather pants and a leather jacket are more than a fashion statement. In the event of an accident, these pieces of clothing can also save you from more serious injury and severe road rash. Helmets, too, while not as fashionable, are equally important. More than any other body part, your head is in danger during a motorcycle accident.

Protect it. The wind in your hair may be appealing, but keeps you from being as protected as you might be.

Some accidents are caused by motorcycle riders. Accelerating too quickly around corners and sliding out, ignoring traffic signals while weaving in and out of lanes - these actions are far more common than they should be.

You cannot control the responsibility of another, but you can control your own. If you drive safely and responsibly, then that is one less thing for you to be worried about while you're enjoying the ride.
