Maryland Man has Insult Added to Accident

A Maryland man was sent to Atlantic General Hospital on Monday after an early morning car accident and following attack by the driver of the other car. Hubert R. Burchette, of Pittsville, was traveling near the intersection of Route 611 and Sunset Avenue at about 4:30 a.m. when his car was struck by Jason P. Mackulin.

The car accident trapped Burchette in his car. Before he had the opportunity to attempt an exit of the vehicle, he was attacked by Mackulin, who had left his car and proceeded to punch Burchette in the face and around the head.

Minutes later, when Maryland State Police officers arrived, Mackulin had to be restrained. He was arrested and his blood alcohol level later tested at two times the legal limit.

Police responding to the scene reported major injuries on the part of Burchette following the car accident and Mackulin's vicious attack. Two men who had been in Mackulin's at the time of the accident were also arrested when they attempted to run from police.

Though neither man had accompanied Mackulin in the attack, both were charged with failing to obey a police officer and obstructing and hindering. Both were later released. Burchette was treated for a number of bruises, but seems poised to make a full recovery.

Under Maryland law, DUI offenses can result in one-to-four years of jail time and up to $4,000 in fines. With assault charges, those numbers could be much higher.

Automobile crash victims can often leave the scene of a collision pain-free, only to experience severe pain a few days later. Emergency room visits help substantiate injury claims; and provide the victims with documented medical records to successful fight and win a client's case. Individuals who have been hurt on the job, in a nursing or healthcare facility, or in a motor vehicle collision should exercise their legal right to pursue monetary compensation for injuries.
